Oxford handbook is a must-read book for both part 1 and part 2.

• Oxford Handbook of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology 2/e

You may consider reading a textbook with the Oxford handbook. I would not consider it mandatory, especially for part 1, but it may help to give you a better understanding, especially if you are relatively new in the field of Microbiology. Choose one that has been published most recently. Following are the books that many other trainees have read.

Part 2 expect a in-depth knowledge of a broad range of subjects. You should be able to run a microbiology service on your own with that knowledge. Only reading oxford handbook or a textbook may not be sufficient. Trainees also taken help from reference books (like Mandell and Kucer's) and other resources to make their own notes.

• Mims’ Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 6e

• Jawetz Melnick & Adelbergs Medical Microbiology 28 E

• Medical Microbiology: A Guide to Microbial Infections: Pathogenesis, Immunity, Laboratory Investigation and Control, 19e

There are not many question books available, some books that can give you practice

• Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Virology: A Q&A Approach for Specialist Medical Trainees

• Tutorial Topics in Infection for the Combined Infection Training Programme

If you are looking for more questions to prepare, you can use USMLE books.

Infection control is an important subject for this examination. You can find many materials from websites but it may help to consolidate your knowledge from a book.

• Manual of Infection Prevention and Control by Nizam Damani (preferred)

• Communicable Disease Control and Health Protection Handbook, 4th Edition

Another important area. Question may come in both part 1 and part 2

• How to Read a Paper: The Basics of Evidence-based Medicine and Healthcare, 6th Edition

• Oxford Handbook of Medical Statistics

These are reference books for FRCPath Microbiology. You may use this to prepare your notes for part 2.
